Pre War
Birth registered as Lenard Angus Hurley, but by Statutary Declaration on 31 Jul 1940 he sought to be known as Angus Lenard Hurley. He had worked as a Sales Assistant (motor parts), and as a Fitter's Assistant. He had completed 7th Grade schooling. During December 1940 Angus was working for the Worthington Scale Company who sought to have him removed from the RAF Reserve list.
War Service
Angus enlisted in the RAAF on 28 Jan 1941 at the No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre, mustered as a Trainee Rigger. He was immediately sent to No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF at Pearce. Drill training behind him, he was posted to No. 4 School of Technical Training RAAF in Adelaide on 24 Mar 1941 where he was a participant in the No. 73 Trainee Technical Fitters course, and then to the No. 3 School of Technical Training RAAF at Ultimo in New South Wales on 4 Jul 1941, to undertake the Instrument Repairers course. With his mustering now Trainee Instrument Repairer, training was complete for the moment, and he was remustered again on 13 Sep 1941, this time as an Instrument Repairer. On 3 Oct 1941 he was posted to No. 1 Aircraft Depot RAAF at Laverton, Victoria.
On 8 Nov 1941 Angus was posted to No. 6 Service Flying Training School RAAF at Mallala in South Australia. Angus was appointed Leading Aircraftman on 1 Mar 1942 and on 21 Jun 1942 transferred to No. 1 School of Technical Training RAAF in Melbourne to undertake the No. 26 Instrument Makers Course. On 1 Mar 1942 he was appointed as a Leading Aircraftman, and at the completion of the course on 29 Sep 1942 he was remustered as an Instrument Maker Trade Group I. On 8 Oct 1942 Angus was transferred to No. 25 (City of Perth) Squadron RAAF. While with them he was detached to No. 1 School of Technical Training RAAF from 24 Aug until 22 Oct 1943 to participate in the No. 8 Electrical Instument Makers course from 25 Aug 1943 to 22 Oct 1943. He again reverted to Aircraftman on 29 Sep 1942 when he was remustered, before again being appointed Leading Aircraftman on 29 Dec 1943. Angus was promoted Acting Corporal on 1 Jan 1944, but on 21 Mar 1944, he reverted to Leading Aircraftman.
On 30 Sep 1944 Angus was transferred to No. 4 Personnel Depot RAAF and almost immediately moved on to No. 2 Reserve Personnel Pool RAAF on 26 Oct 1944. On 27 Oct 1944 Angus was posted to No. 5 Radio Installation & Maintenance Unit RAAF, and then on 4 Nov 1944 to No. 7 Repair and Salvage Unit RAAF. On 16 Oct 1945 Angus was transferred to No. 4 Repair & Salvage Unit RAAF remaining with them until 29 Nov 1945 when joined No. 12 Aircraft Recovery Depot RAAF. On 2 Jan 1946 Angus was posted home to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF where he was discharged on 5 Mar 1946.
Post War
During 1947 Lenard married Gladys Olivia Mary (Olive) Murray (1920 - 2011). They had four children, one being Mark Hurley. Electoral Roll entries: 1949 - 180 at 240 Station street, East Cannington, cash register mechanic/mechanic.
Notes
While his RAAF Records list him as Angus Lenard Hurley, his birth is registered as Lenard Angus, and he is also listed in Electoral Rolls in that way.
