Pre War
War Service
Edgar enlisted at Claremont on 30 Oct 1940 and on 1 Nov 1940 he was posted to the Naval Base Training Depot where he joined the No. 3 Depot Battalion on 27 Nov 1940. On 14 Jan 1941 he was transferred to the 2nd Training Battalion at Northam. There, on 11 Feb 1941 Edgar was charged with having been AWOL from midnight 10 Feb 1941 until 10:30pm on 11 Oct 1941, He forfeited a day's pay and was awarded 4 days Confined to Barracks (CB). On 12 Feb 1941 he was posted to the 6th reinforcement draft for the 2/28th Australian Infantry Battalion. However, on 17 Apr 1941 this was changed to the 7th reinforcement draft for the 2/32nd Australian Infantry Battalion. From 21 - 23 Apr 1941 Edgar was treated by the Northam Camp Hospital for Impetigo to the face.
From 24 April until 30 April 1940, Edgar enjoyed pre-embarkation leave. Then on 24 Jun 1941 he was admitted to the 110th Australian Base Hospital with Diarrhoea, remaining with them until he was released on 3 Jul 1941. On 7 Sep 1941 Edgar finally boarded the HMT Queen Mary in Fremantle bound for the Middle East. They disembarked in Port Tewfik on 23 Sep 1941 and Edgar was allocated to the 24th Australian Infantry Training Battalion on 15 Nov 1941. On 30 Dec 1941 Edgar joined the 2/32nd Australian Infantry Battalion.
On 27 Mar 1942 Edgar was charged with having been AWOL from 2:00pm until 4:30pm on that day. He was awarded 3 days Confined to Barracks. At the same time he was charged with Drunkenness for which he was fined 5/- (a day's pay) by the Officer Commanding D Company. On 10 Apr 1942 he was evacuated to the 2/3rd Australian Field Ambulance for treatment for Pyrexia. Then on 14 Apr 1942 he was transferred to the 2/3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, and they in turn passed him to the 2/8th Australian Field Ambulance on 20 Apr 1942 for treatment for Influenza. On 27 Apr 1942 he was transferred again, this time back to the 2/3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station. Finally, on 8 May 1942 he was released to the 9th Australian Infantry Division' Rest Camp. He was then released back to the battalion on 26 May 1942.
However, he was transferred on 7 Jul 1942 to the 19th Australian Infantry Training Battalion, so all was not well. He was transferred to the AIF (ME) Staging Camp on 20 July and then three days later he was back with the Battalion. However, on 25 July he was evacuated to the 2/3rd Australian Field Ambulance, and three days later on 28 Jul 1942 he was transferred to the 6th British Base Hospital. On 5 Aug 1942 they transferred him to the 2/6th Australian General Hospital where he was classified as "Fit for duties other than Active Service with Field Formations", and on 6 Sep 1942 he was released to the Australian Infantry Training Battalion who transferred him on 8 Sep 1942 to HQ AIF (Middle East) at Kilo 89.
On 31 Jan 1943 Edgar and his unit embarked for Australia, witrh Edgar disembarking at Fremanle on 18 Feb 1843. On 25 Mar 1943 Edgar was in Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot's Returnee Section for reposting, and on 7 Apr 1943 he was transferred to the 10th Australian Garrison Battalion on Rottnest. On 27 Sep 1943 he was granted Special Leave without pay, and on his return on 19 Nov 1943 it was decided to discharge him which took place on 23 Nov 1943.
