John enlisted at No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre on 22 Oct 1940, mustered as a Trainee Wireless Operator. Having passed the medical he was posted the same day to No. 1 RAAF Recruiting Centre at Laverton in Victoria, arriving there on 25 October.
