Jack enlisted in the CMF on 6 Nov 1940 and moved to Melville camp on 8 Dec 1940, posted to the 16th Australian Infantry Battalion (Cameron Highlanders Regiment) who granted Jack Christmas leave from 24 - 31 Dec 1940. On 21 Mar 1941 Jack was appointed Lance Corporal, and on 1 Oct 1941 he was called up for full time duty. He was promoted Acting Corporal on 9 Oct 1941.
