War Service
Herbert enlisted in the CMF as a member of the 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment ww2 on 21 Oct 1941 in Bunbury and was called up for full time service on 5 Jan 1942. On 21 Apr 1942 he was detached to the 6th Infantry Brigade, with initial posting on 31 May 1942 to A Coy of the 10th Reconnaissance Battalion. On 16 Jun 1942 he was transferred to the 25th Light Horse (Machine Gun) Regiment which was later known as 25th Cavalry Regiment. From 7 Dec 1942 until 23 Jan 1943 he was granted Leave without Pay (LWOP). rejoining at Moora. On 13 May 1943 he was again granted LWOP, this time until 18 Jun 1943.
Herb departed Perth for Victoria on 28 Sep 1943, and arrived there on 2 Oct 1943. Two days later he joined the 19th Australian Infantry Training Battalion at Dubbo. On 6 Nov 1943 he was sent on a mortar course in Bathurst that lasted until 5 Dec 1943. He then enjoyed 18 days leave back in Western Australia during January and February 1944. On his return from leave, Herbert joined the 23rd Australian Infantry Training Battalion at Cowra on 8 Mar 1944. Then on 19 May 1944 he was sent to Canungra Jungle Training Centre until 5 Aug 1944 when he was sent to the Northern Territory. On 18 Aug 1944 he was transferred to the 16th Australian Infantry Battalion (Cameron Highlanders Regiment), and on 21 Nov 1944 embarked with them on the USAT Evangaline for Jacquinot Bay in New Britain, arriving there on 26 Nov 1944.
On 13 May 1945 Herbert was evacuated to the 2nd Australian Field Ambulance for treatment for epilepsy, being sent back to his unit the next day. However, on 28 May 1945 he was admitted to the 105th Australian Casualty Clearing Station on New Britain with epilepsy and they transferred him to the nearby 2/8th Australian General Hospital on 1 Jun 1945. On 11 Jun 1945 he was transferred by plane to the 2/7th Australian General Hospital in Lae, New Guinea, followed on 17 Jun 1945 with a further flight to the 2/14th Australian General Hospital in Townsville. On 27 Jun 1945 Herbert was placed on an Ambulance Train and sent to the 102nd Australian General Hospital in Holland Park, Brisbane. On 29 Jun 1945 he was again transported, this time to the 115th Australian General Hospital in Heidelberg, Victoria. On 4 Jul 1945 he was transferred again by train to the 110th Australian Base Hospital Perth.
On arrival he was granted 18 days leave, and on 20 Jul 1945 his Medical Board found him to be suffering with epilepsy and after a month in the General Discharge Depot, he was discharged on 28 Aug 1945.
Post War
In 1947 Herbert married Phyllis Rose Allen (1923 - 2017). They had 4 daughters and three sons.
