Had passed both the Junior and Senior School examinations.
War Service
George enlisted in the CMF on 29 Oct 1941 as a part time Trooper with the 25th Australian Cavalry Regiment, and was called up for full time service on 15 Dec 1941. He was seen by the 8th Casualty Clearing Station at Gingin on 24 Jul 1942, before being admitted to 110th Australian Base Hospital on the same day with Diphtheria. He rejoined his unit on 21 Aug 1942 and transferred to the 2nd AIF on 13 Oct 1942 when he was given army number WX34041. On 30 Nov 1942 George was transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot to enable his discharge for entry into the RAAF on 2 Dec 1942 at No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF.
As an Aircraftman, he mustered as Air Crew V (Guard) and was held at No. 4 Recruit Depot until 2 Jan 1943 when he was posted to No. 6 Replenishing Centre. On 8 Mar 1943 George arrived at No. 4 Initial Training School RAAF at Victor Harbour in South Australia. On 19 Apr 1943 George was remustered as Air Crew V (Pilot) and on 22 May 1943 promoted Leading Aircraftman, and remustered as Air Crew II (Pilot).
On 26 May 1943 George was posted to No. 9 Elementary Flying Training School RAAF at Cunderdin where he logged 58 hours in a De Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth before moving on to No. 4 SSTS at Geraldton on 3 Aug 1943. On 18 Nov 1943 he was promoted Temporary Sergeant and remustered as an Airman Pilot at No. 4 SFTS before moving on the next day to No. 5 Embarkation Depot RAAF and then on 12 Dec 1943 to No. 2 Embarkation Depot RAAF in Sydney. On 26 Jan 1944 George embarked in Sydney and is likely to have travelled by troops ship to San Francisco where on disembarkation they travelled to New York on the east coast, and then by ship to the west coast of the UK. He disembarked in the UK on 12 Mar 1944 and was sent to join No. 11 Personnel Despatch & Receiving Centre RAAF at Brighton. On 18 May 1944 while still there he was promoted Temporary Flight Sergeant.
On 10 Aug 1944 George was posted to No. 1 Personnel Depot & Receiving Centre at West Kirby (near Liverpool) and on the 20th, he embarked for Egypt, disembarking there on 8 Sep 1944 to join the No. 156 ATC for three days before joining No. 1 (Middle East) ARC. Ten days later his posting was to RAF Qastina for three days, and then on 27 Oct 1944 he was posted to RAF Station Shandur. While in Egypt, George accumulated more than 62 hours operational flying while posted to No. 70 Operational Training Unit RAF. On the move again, January 1945 was spent in Personnel units until 30 Jan 1945 when he was posted to No. 454 Squadron RAAF which was active in the Italian Campaign. During his time with them George flew on 20 sorties, totaling more than 36 hours and another 89 hours non operational flying. While posted to 454 Squadron, George was promoted Temporary Warrant Officer (18 May 1945), and on 13 Aug 1945 he was granted a Commission as a Pilot Officer. The next day he began his journey home, posted first to No. 54 PTC, then on 27 Aug 1945 to No. 22 PTC and finally on 29 Oct 1945 he was in Perth with No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF. George was discharged from the RAAF on 4 Feb 1946
