War Service
John enlisted at No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre on 22 Oct 1940, mustered as a Trainee Wireless Operator. Having passed the medical he was posted the same day to No. 1 RAAF Recruiting Centre at Laverton in Victoria, arriving there on 25 October. He was promoted to Acting Corporal on 1 Nov 1941, and progressed on 17 Nov 1940 to No. 1 School of Technical Training RAAF to begin training as a wireless operator, but this changed on 9 Feb 1941 when he was posted to No. 1 Signals School RAAF at Point Cook to undertake the Office Orderley Signals Course. On 20 Feb 1941 he was posted to Bankstown Station Headquarters where John was appointed Leading Aircraftman on 16 Jun 1941 and on 24 Jun 1941 his mustering changed to 'Clerk Pay'.
On 25 Jul 1941 John was posted to A.F.H.Q. for a time before moving on 8 Sep 1941 to No. 4 School of Technical Training RAAF briefly, and then on 13 Oct 1941 to RAAF Base Pearce where he remained for almost a year. While there he was promoted Temporary Corporal on 1 Jan 1942, and to Acting Sergeant on 1 Apr 1942. On 8 Jul 1942 John was posted to No. 4 Medical Receiving Station RAAF where on 1 Sep 1942 he was promoted Acting Sergeant and then on 29 Dec 1942 he was posted to No. 2 Embarkation Depot RAAF at Bradfield Park preparatory for overseas service. On 27 Feb 1943 John was transferred to the No. 1 Embarkation Depot RAAF to prepare for transfer to the European theatre of war.
