Griffith was mobilised into the CMF on 30 Jul 1941 and was posted to the 122nd Reserve Motor Transport Company. Griffith was posted to Rottnest on 20 Aug 1941 before returning to the 122nd Reserve Motor Transport Company on 3 Oct 1941. On 25 Oct 1941 Griffith was charged with Disobeying a lawful command given by a superior officer on Rottnest and was fined Ten shillings, or 2 days pay.
Griffith returned to the mainland on 20 Dec 1941 and on 26 Jan 1942 he was transferred to the Melville camp until 29 Jan 1942 before his next posting to the 55th Australian Anti Aircraft Company RAE at Buckland Hill. Again this posting was for only a fw days, and he continued to be lent to units on a short term basis until 15 Aug 1942 when he was transferred to the 124th Australian General Transport Company at Karrakatta and was redefined as a TG2 instead of TG3 Driver Mechanic.
