Brief History

2nd Port Maintenance Company was formed at Meadowbank in NSW during October 1943 when it took over the control of platoons of 1 Port Maintenance Company that were then at Port Moresby, Buna, Lae and Finschhafen. In May 1944 the platoons were returned to 1st Port Maintenance Company and the unit at Meadowbank was restructured as 1st Port Construction Company. In August 1944 the unit moved to Toorbul Point in Queensland as part of its preparation for their role in liberating Borneo. As part of the 7th Base Sub Area they left for Morotai in May 1945 and landed at Balikpapan in July. At the end of the war they were busy reconstructing the port and oil infrastructure.
