Pre War
War Service
On 27 Apr 1942 Robert enlisted in the CMF and was allocated to the Western Command Ordnance Workshops. On 27 Apr 1942 he was called up for full time service and was transferred to the Ordnance Depot. On 3 Sep 1942 Robert was transferred to the 9th Advanced Ordnance Depot where from 23 Sep 1942 until 12 Oct 1942 he was detached to Special Duty. On 1 Jan 1943 he was classified as a Driver Mechanic Trade Group 3, and from 1 Mar until 27 Mar 1943 he attended a Driver/Mechanics course. On 16 Apr 1943 Robert volunteered for overseas service and was transferred to the 2nd AIF.
On 25 Apr 1943 he was charged with having been AWOL from midnight 24 Apr 1943 until 7:45am on 25 Apr 1943. He was fined £1 and forfeited a day's pay. Robert on 12 Aug 1943 married Freda Jamar Murphy. On 17 Jan 1944 Robert was transferred to the 5th Australian Base Workshop where on 27 Mar 1944 he was charged with having been AWOL from 7:45am on 25 Mar 1944 until 9:00am on 27 Mar 1944. This time he was fined £3 and forfeited 3 days pay. Robert was transferred on 29 Nov 1944 to the Fortress Workshop Darwin, joining them in Darwin on 16 Dec 1944. He was then transferred to the Northern Territory Area Workshop on 19 Feb 1945, remaining with them until 20 Dec 1945 when he was transferred to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot in order to take his discharge on 8 Jan 1946.
