WW 1 Service
Austin enlisted for service as a 25 year old on 6 Oct 1914 with Regimental Number 194. Allocated to the 10th Light Horse Regiment, he sailed with them for Egypt on HMAT A47 Mashobra on 8 Feb 1915. in Egypt he was admitted to the No 2 General Hospital on 26 Mar 1915 suffering with measles. They transferred him to the Infectious Hospital in Abbassia on 6 Apr 1915. He later joined A Squadron of the 10th Light Horse at Anzac Cove on 5 Aug 1915, but was soon in action, resulting in him receiving a Gun Shot Wound to his upper left thigh - classified as severe on 15 Aug 1915 while in the trenches on Russell's Top.
He was evacuated and transferred to Alexandria aboard HMT Scotian arriving on 25 Aug 1915 where he was admitted to the No 15 General Hospital. He was later transferred by HMHS Tagus which departed for England on 18 Sep 1915. On arrival he was admitted to the 3rd London General Hospital at Wandsworth on 28 Sep 1915, and the bullet was removed on 4 Oct 1915. Austin was discharged from hospital on 25 Oct 1915. On recovering strength he was sent home to Australia on HMAT A29 Suevic on 11 Mar 1916, arriving in Fremantle on 22 Apr 1916, and his discharge on medical grounds followed on 19 Sep 1916. He was granted a pension of 30/- per fortnight from 20 Sep 1916. This was reduced to 20/- per fortnight from 14 Feb 1918
Between the Wars
During 1919 Austin married Gladys Mead Shute in Perth (1895 - 1942). Gladys died in Kelmscott on 3 Sep 1942, aged 47.

WW 2 Service
Austin enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps at Armadale on 22 Mar 1942 and was allocated to the 2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion. On 4 Dec 1944 he was discharged at his own request.
