War Service

John enlisted at No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre on 22 Oct 1940, mustered as a Trainee Wireless Operator. Having passed the medical he was posted the same day to No. 1 RAAF Recruiting Depopt at Laverton in Victoria, arriving there on 25 October. He progressed on 17 Nov 1940 to No. 1 School of Technical Training RAAF to begin training as a wireless operator, but this changed on 9 Feb 1941 when he was posted to No. 1 Signals School RAAF at Point Cook to undertake the Office Orderley Signals Course. John was appointed Leading Aircraftman on 16 Jun 1941 and on 24 Jun 1941 his mustering changed to 'Clerk Pay'


Acting Corporal 1 Nov 1941 Temporary Corporal 1 Jan 1942 Acting Sewrgeant 1 Apr 1942 8 Jul 1942 posted to 4 MRS RAAF WA Temporary Sergeant 1 Sep 1942 On 29 Dec 1942 admitted to No. 4 Medical Receiving Station part of No. 2 Embarkation Depot RAAF. On 27 Feb 1943 John was transferred to the No. 1 Embarkation Depot RAAF in preparation of a transfer to the European theatre of war. On 17 Apr 1943 John arrived in England and joined the staff of RAAF Headquarters London, remaining with them as a Pay Clerk until 1 Nov 1945. During this time he was promoted on 1 Feb 1944 to Temporary Flight Sergeant. On 1 Feb 1944 when John began his journey home by being posted to No. 11. In turn he was posted to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF, where he was discharged on 20 Feb 1946 with 72 day's pay in lieu of leave..
