Pre War

War Service

On 25 May 1943 Alan enlisted in the 2nd AIF, 2 months before his 21st birthday. He was allocated to General Reinforcements and on 5 June transferred to the 36th Australian Infantry Training Battalion. On 13 Jun 1943 he was admitted to the 60th Australian Camp Hospital and was returned to his training unit on 2 Jul 1943. The next day he was transferred to the 13th Australian Infantry Training Battalion, and then on 4 September to the 4th Australian Trade Training Depot where he undertook a Driver/Mechanic course before returning to his training battalion.


Training completed, on 14 Jan 1944 he transferred to the 54th Australian Infantry Battalion (Lachlan - Macquarie Regiment) and on 18 Feb 1944 he entrained for Brisbane. On 5 Jul 1944 Allan was transferred to the 2/13 Australian Infantry Battalion who 6 days later transferred him to the 9th Australian Infantry Division Provost Company where he undertook the 6 week General Provost course that was completed on 18 Nov 1944. On 14 Mar 1945 Allan was detached to HQ 26th Australian Infantry Brigade.


On 8 Apr 1945 Allan embarked with the 2/24th Australian Infantry Battalion in Townsville aboard USS General H.W. Butner (AP-113) which sailed the next day for Morotai which was reached on 16 April with the troops disembarking the same day. On 10 May 1945 Allan was admitted to the 2/5th Australian General Hospital until 5 Jun 1945 when he was released to his unit. On 27 Jun 1945 Allan embarked at Morotai for British North Borneo where on 29 Jun 1945 he was charged with 'Conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline' leading to a £5 fine and forfeiture of 28 days pay. On 22 Jul 1945 he was transferred to the 2/106th Workshop Platoon


On 5 Jan 1946 Allan emplaned in Labuan for the mainland arriving in Western Australia where he was held by the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot awaiting re-allocation to a new unit. On 2 Feb 1946 he was sent to the 3rd Battalion at the Australian Reinforcement Training Battalion (Jungle Warfare) arriving there on 15 Feb 1946, and transferring to 1st Engineer Stores Base Depot on 25 Feb 1946. On 27 Jul 1946 Allan was evacuated to the 102nd Australian General Hospital with Balanitis, returning to his unit on 3 Aug 1946. On 25 Aug 1946 he was evacuated to the 112th Australian General Hospital with a fractured right foot injured in an accident. No military investigation was warranted. Allan was released back to his unit on 1 Oct 1946. On 1 Nov 1945 he was sent to Queensland Line of Communication Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for discharge proceedings which were finalised on 11 Nov 1946

Post War

On 30 Aug 1947 Allan, married Evalyn Carlotta Kershaw (1922 - 2008) in Brisbane. Allan had three children, Margaret, Karen and Terry to an earlier wife?. Evalyn had two children from an earlier marriage - Terry and Coral.
