Records relating to Angus' early training in Australia and Egypt are missing. On 18 Oct 1915 he embarked from Alexandria on HMT Kalyan for Mudros where he was taken on strength by the 16th Battalion on 23 Oct 1915. Angus returned to Alexandria on HMAT A11 Ascanius, disembarking on 30 Dec 1915.
On 1 Jun 1916 his unit was embarked on HMT Canada and they disembarked in Marseilles on 9 Jun 1916.
From 28 May 1917 until 17 Jul 1917 he was absent from the unit with gonorrhoea being treated in Boulogne and then by the 39th General Hospital in Le Havre (32 days ineffective). 12 days after rejoining the unit he was re-admitted to hospital with VD until 25 Aug 1917 (19 days ineffective).
