Enlisted part time in the CMF at Armadale on 16 Jul 1942, and was called up for full time duty on 28 Jul 1942. He was posted to the General Reinforcments Pool until 5 Aug 1942 when he was posted to the 13th Australian Infantry Training Battalion at Northam. On 1 Sep 1942 he was transferred to the 109th Anti-Aircraft Training Battery who detached him on 29 Sep 1942 to the 419th Anti-Aircraft Station. He was discharged from the AMF on 12 Apr 1943 to enlist in the 2nd AIF the following Day with his new number WX38400. On 29 May 1943 he was transferred to the 455th Bakers Hill Gun Station, and then on 23 Jul 1943 to the 25th Australian Heavy Anti-Aircraft Battery (Static).
The unit's named changed to the 804th Australian Anti-Aircraft & Coastal Artillery Battery on 2 Sep 1944 before Stan transferred again on 4 Oct 1944 to the 1st Australian Base Depot Personnel. On 24 Dec 1944 they, in turn, transferred Stan to the 28th Australian Infantry Training Battalion. Following training with them he was sent on 12 Apr 1945 to the Australian Reinforcement Training Battalion (Jungle Warfare) at Cunungra to prepare for service overseas. With the completion of his training he was embarked aboard SS Both in Brisbane for Morotai where he disembarked on 25 Jun 1945. On arrival in Morotai he was placed in the 1st Australian Advance Reinforcement Depot before being allocated to the 63rd Australian Infantry Battalion on 25 Aug 1945.

On 24 Apr 1946 Stan embarked in Morotai on HMT Duntroon for Rabaul, disembarking there on 2 May 1946, and on 6 May he was posted to the 31/51st Australian Infantry Battalion. However, his stay was very brief as on 8 Jun 1946 he was transferred to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for discharge, which took place on 28 Jun 1946.
