War Service

Six weeks after entering Blackboy Hill Camp, Hector is allocated to the 5th reinforcement draft for the 8th Battery, 3rd Australian Field Artillery Brigade.

On 1 Aug 1915 at Gallipoli he mustered as a Gunner and was taken on strength by them. Remained on Gallipoli with them until he returned on the HMAT A38 Ulysses to Alexandria on the 22 Dec 1915.

On 22 Feb 1916 at Tel-el-Kebir he re-mustered as a Driver, and on 23 Mar 1916 he embarks in Alexandria to join the BEF in France, arriving in Marseilles on the 29th.

In late Sep 1917 Hector is granted leave in the UK, and soon after he rejoined his unit (5 Nov 1917) Hector was ill enough to be sent to hospital. Nine days later he was evacuated to England where he entered the 2nd Military Hospital ,Old Park, Canterbury with gastritis. Over the next few months he bounces from one recuperation base to another, while also requiring additional time in hospital with the measles, until, on 10 Jul 1918 he leaves Heytesbury and proceeds to France from Southampton. On 27 Jul 1918 he rejoined his unit in France.

As a 1914/15 enlistee he is one of the first to be sent home and begins by returning to England on 23 Jan 1919. However, influenza strikes him and he again needs to spend time in hospital (26 Jan to 3 Feb 1919).

Discharged 5th Military District 10 Jun 1919.

"Enlisted in March 1915, 8th Artillery. Fought through the Gallipoli campaign; went with the troops to France, and thence to Belgium."

Post War

Married Gertrude Dorothy Adams in Fremantle during 1920. 12 June 1923, daughter Margaret Frances born. Gertrude died 28 Jan 1979 aged 82.
