Gerald enlisted in the RAAF at No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre, mustered as a Guard TG V on 8 Jan 1943. The same day he was sent to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF, and then the next day (9 January) to No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF at Busseltopn to undertake a basic Recruit Drill course.
