Gerald enlisted in the RAAF at No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre, mustered as a Guard TG V on 8 Jan 1943. The same day he was sent to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF, and then the next day (9 January) to No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF at Busseltopn to undertake a basic Recruit Drill course. Basic training completed, he was posted on 12 Feb 1943 to RAAF Base Pearce. However, on 27 Feb 1943 he was transferred to No. 5 Initial Training School RAAF at Clontarf.
