Pre War

Gerald had attended the Gosnells State School, and the Perth Boys School where he passed the Junior Exam with 6 subjects

War Service

Gerald enlisted in the RAAF at No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre, mustered as a Guard TG V on 8 Jan 1943. The same day he was sent to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF, and then the next day (9 January) to No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF in Busselton to undertake a basic Recruit Drill course. Basic training completed, he was posted on 12 Feb 1943 to RAAF Base Pearce. However, on 27 Feb 1943 he was transferred to No. 5 Initial Training School RAAF at Clontarf.


On 1 Jul 1943 Gerald remustered as Motor Boat Crew, and was posted to the No. 2 Flying Boat Repair Depot at Rathmines RAAF Base, New South Wales. On 26 Jul 1943 his posting changed to RAAF Base Rathmines. On 8 Nov 1943 he was transferred to No. 2 Personnel Depot RAAF at Bradfield Park, who then transferred him on 23 Dec 1943 to the No. 1 Reserve Personnel Pool RAAF at Townsville.


Gerald then entered Papua New Guinea, having been posted to No. 44 Operational Base Unit RAAF at Merauke on 2 Jan 1944, and on 14 January he was promoted to Leading Aircraftman. On 20 Mar 1944 Gerald was charged with Conduct to the prejudice of good order and Air Force discipline in that he was in a nude state in the close vicinity of the pontoon wharf. He was awarded 4 days confined to barracks, and then on 1 Jul 1944 Gerald was charged with "Conduct to the prejudice of Good order and Air Force discipline, in that he repeated an order in an insolent tongue after it was given by Sergeant Dalglish. He was awarded 14 days confined to Barracks (non custodial).Gerald remained with this unit for 16 months before transferring to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF on 2 May 1945. On 18 May 1945 Gerald moved to No. 82 Operational Base Unit RAAF at Crawley Bay in Perth. On the move again after a brief wait for a new unit, 26 Oct 1945 saw him join No. 76 Operational Base Unit RAAF at Exmouth Gulf. Finally on 20 Dec 1945 Gerald was posted to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF to prepare for his discharge which took place on 9 Jan 1946.

Post War

During 1949 Gerald married Nita Love Kelly.(1921 - 2012)
