On 18 May 1942 he moved again, this time to No. 7 Elementary Flying Training School RAAF at Western Junction, and it was while he was there that he was promoted Sergeant on 1 Nov 1942. Nicholas was admitted to the Laune General Hospital from 3 - 20 Nov 1942, and on 18 Jan 1943 he was posted to No. 1 Operational Training Unit RAAF, then at Bairnsdale in Victoria. The unit moved to East Sale, also in Victoria, later in 1943. On 15 Dec 1943 Nicholas was transferred to No. 9 Elementary Flying Training School RAAF at Cunderdin.
