Will enlisted in Perth on 2 Sep 1941 and soon after was posted to Rottnest Island. On 6 Oct 1941 Will was admitted to 39th Australian Camp Hospital on Rottnest before being passed on the same day to LMCH (??) which transferred Will on 10 Oct 1941 to 110th Australian Base Hospital in Fremantle. On 22 October he was released to his unit, but on 7 Nov 1941 he was admitted to the Lucknow Hospital in Claremont. Released a week later on 14 November he was granted 2 days leave. Ill again on 23 Jan 1942 for two days, he apparently was left in his lines rather than be admitted to hospital. On 25 Feb 1942 Will was posted to No 1 Section of 8th Supply Personnel Company which moved to Northam. Will's health was still causing problems, and on 10 Apr 1942 he was admitted to the 38th Australian Camp Hospital' Camp Dressing Station until 5 May when he was sent home until he reported to his unit on 13 May 1942.

On 16 Aug 1942 Will was posted to the 1st Australian Army in Queensland entraining in Perth on 17 Aug 1942, and arriving later in the month before being posted to the 238th Australian Supply Depot Platoon on 26 Aug 1943. However, when in November 1943 they were sent to Merauke in Dutch New Guinea, Bill was transferred (18 Nov 1943) to the 3rd Australian Supply Depot Company. From 2 - 7 Dec 1943 Will received treatment from the 22nd Australian Camp Hospital for Diarrhoea. Will was transferred on 25 Apr 1944 to the 211th Australian Supply Depot Platoon before needing treatment from the 22nd Australian Camp Hospital for a scalded left ankle on 15 Apr 1944. As he would require more than 7 days treatment he was then transferred to the "X" (Unattached) List. The next entry in his records has him being granted Proficiency Pay on 1 Jul 1943 so it would appear that he was with the 211th Australian Supply Depot Platoon at that time.

On 11 Sep 1944 Will was evacuated to the 4th Australian Camp Hospital at Exhibition in Brisbane, suffering from Antral Infection. The next day Will was transferred to the 2/4th Australian General Hospital and on 29 Sep 1944 he was oved again, this time to the 2/12th Australian General Hospital and eventually discharged to the Queensland Line of Communication Area General Details Depot. Needing to be reassigned, he was sent on the No. 3 Clerical Course (Supply) run by the LHQ AASC School in Geelong from 29 January until 7 April 1945. Course completed he was transferred to the 214th Australian Supply Depot Platoon on 19 Apr 1945 where he was reclassified as a Trade Group III Clerk. On 11 Jun 1945 he was transferred briefly to the 215th Australian Supply Depot Platoon, before returning to the 214th ASD Platoon on 18 Jul 1945.

On 20 Oct 1945 he was transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot to prepare for discharge, an event that occurred on 19 Dec 1945.
