William enlisted in the CMF on 8 Apr 1942 at Claremont, and was almost immediately called up for full time service (17 Apr 1942) and posted to the 5th Australian Motor Ambulance Convoy. On 5 Oct 1942 he was charged with having been AWOL from 4:00pm 4 Oct 42 until 6:45am the next day (5 Oct 1942)For this he was fined 2 days pay, with an automatic forfeiture of a days pay. Undeterred he was again AWOL from midnight 7 Nov 1942 until 8:20am 8 Nov 1942. Again found guilty he was fined 45/- ($4.50) with an automatic forfeiture of another day's pay. On 13 Nov 1942 he was transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for re-assignment.
On 19 Nov 1942 he was transferred to the 8th AASC Training Company at Northam where on 12 Dec 1942 he was charged with neglecting to obey a General Order, earning him an admonishment from his Commanding Officer. On 4 Jan 1943 William was charged with having been AWOL from 7:15am on 3 January until 6:45am on 4 Jan 1943. Fined 20/- ($2) and automatic loss of a day's pay. On 23 Jan 1943 he was sent to the Motor Trade Training Depot for a training course, returning to 8th AASC Training Company on 12 Mar 1943, before being posted to the 138th Australian General Transport Company on 18 Mar 1943. On 27 Apr 1943 William was charged with failing to appear at a place of parade, for which he was awarded 3 days CB (Confined to Barracks). On 12 May 1943 he was transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for discharge (underage). What seemed to have angered the Army most of all is that he had made a false answer to a question on his Attestation form. William was discharged the same day.
enlisting in the RAAF on 15 Jan 1944.
At the time Bill was discharged from the RAAF on 12 Jun 1975, he held the rank of Squadron Leader with No. 481 Squadron.
Post War
During 1947 Bill married Norma Audrey Cornell.
Electoral Roll entries: 1968 at 5 Amaroo road west, Darwin RAAF Officer; 1977 - 1980 at 8 Serena street, Falcon, retired
Notes
On 4 Feb 1992 William applied for a War Service Loan based on his Army service. DVA entry on form indicates he was discharged from the CMF for providing a false birth date on Attestation, but he later served in the RAAF, rising to the rank of Squadron Leader.
