War Service
Although Ray's RAAF enlistment papers mention that he had served with the Army Service Corp's A Section AASC Supply Column with Army No. W32924 for 3 months immediately prior to enlisting in the RAAF, no record can yet be found of it. On 7 Aug 1941 Ray enlisted in the RAAF and was sent to No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF Pearce. Basic drill training out of the way, Ray on 25 Aug 1941 was transferred to the Perth based No. 5 School of Technical Training RAAF for the No 107 Trainee Technical Fitter from 28 Aug to 10 Nov 41. Following the completion of the course Ray was transferred on 8 Nov 41 to the No. 1 Engineering School RAAF at Ascot Vale in Victoria where from 30 Nov 41 - 27 Feb 1942 he participated in No 94 Flight Riggers Course Ascot Vale.
On 5 Mar 1942 Ray was posted to No. 2 Elementary Flying Training School RAAF at Archerfield, a suburb of Brisbane. However, on 26 Apr 1942 he was transferred to the No. 7 Elementary Flying Training School RAAF at Western Junction near Launceston in Tasmania. There on 1 Jun 1942 Ray was appointed as a Leading Aircraftman. On 25 Aug 1942 he was sent back to the No. 1 Engineering School RAAF at Ascot Vale in Victoria where from 27 Aug 1942 until 28 Oct 1942 he undertook the Fitter IIA Conversion Course. On completion he was remustered as a Fitter Level IIA, reverting as he did to Aircraftman. He was then posted on 2 Nov 1942 to the No. 1 Aircraft Depot RAAF at Laverton south of Melbourne, where on 1 Feb 1943 he was again appointed a Leading Aircraftman. Ray remained with them until 13 Jun 1944 when he was again sent to the No. 1 Engineering School RAAF to undertake the No. 28 Junior NCO Course. Successful, he returned to the aircraft depot from 29 Aug 1944 until he was transferred to the No. 2 Personnel Depot RAAF in early 1945.
On 19 Feb 1945 Ray was sent to the No. 1 Reserve Personnel Pool RAAF until 9 Apr 1945 when he was posted overseas to the No. 10 Repair and Salvage Unit RAAF, then in Nadzab, New Guinea. Soon after they moved to Lae. He remained with them until 15 Nov 1945 when the unit was disbanded, transferring to the No. 111 Air Sea Rescue Flight RAAF. Sent back to the No. 1 Reserve Personnel Pool RAAF on 4 Dec 1945, he was discharged by the No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF on 7 Feb 1946.

Electoral Roll entries: 1949 - 1972 at Kununoppin, labourer; 1977 - 1980 at 6 Erskine place, City Beach; Ray married Elizabeth Hilary Crawford ?? and the had two children.
