Enlisted in the Australian Women's Army Service as Vivienne Close on 19 Aug 1942 in Perth and was detached to the [[Fixed Defences Fremantle]] until 22 Nov 1942 when she was also classified as a Trade Group 1 Draftswoman. On 14 Dec 1942 she was transferred to he 2nd RAE Training Centre at Northam. On 2 Aug 1943 she transferred to the 6th AWS Training Company before moving to the 10th Australian CRE (Works) on 6 Aug 1943.
