On joining the CMF he was allocated to the 10th Australian Garrison Battalion. He was treated by the CDS in Claremont from 28 May to 3 Jun 1940, and later granted leave from 6 - 29 Dec 1940. On 20 Jan 1941 he was transferred to 'Y' Company and called up for full time service. On 24 Mar 1941 he was transferred to the 5th Australian Garrison Battalion, and was mustered as a Trade Group III Signaller from 16 May 1941, before being granted some more leave, from 24 to 31 May 1941.
