Ted enlisted in Claremont on 4 Aug 1941, and on 12 Aug 1941 he joined the 3rd Training Battalion at Northam. On 9 Sep 1941 he had completed his initial drill training and was posted to the 1st Training Battalion for infantry training. On 17 Nov 1941 he was meant to embark on Convoy US 13, but failed to do so, with no reason recorded. On 10 Dec 1941 he was back with the training battalion, this time allocated to the 10th reinforcment draft for the 2/16th Battalion.
