Edward enlisted at Claremont on 23 Jul 1940, and was sent to the melville camp. On 1 Sep 1940 he was admitted to [[10th AUstralian Base Hospital]] with influenza, before being release to resume training at Northam on 6 Nov 1940, but on 19 Nov 1940 he was admitted to [[38th Australian Camp Hospital]] until 30 Nov 1942.
