Pre War

On 19 Nov 1933 Bill had married Marjorie Fewster. Marjorie died on 1 Jun 2010 aged 97 in Bayswater. They had a son John Neville Beattie, born 27 Jan 1933.

War Service

On 27 Jan 1942 Bill was called up and commenced full time service from 5 Feb 1942 when he was posted to the 8th Supply Personnel Company. On 23 Mar 1942 he had the day at home under Doctors orders, before being discharged on 3 Apr 1942 in order to join the RAAF.

Bill enlisted in the RAAF at No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre where his enlistment commenced on 11 Oct 1942. Initially mustered as Aircrew Trade Group V before spending a period in 110th Australian Base Hospital from 18 - 23 Nov 1942. His next posting was to No. 5 Initial Training School RAAF, before being remustered as a Driver Motor Vehicle, and posted on 14 May 1943 to No. 17 Repair & Salvage Unit RAAF at Cunderdin before the unit relocated to Pearce in July. Bill was promoted Leading Aircraftman on 14 Aug 1943.


On 29 Feb 1944 Bill was attached to No. 5 Embarkation Depot RAAF before being posted to No. 85 Squadron RAAF on 10 Apr 1944. However, on 3 May 1944 Bill was hospitalised for 4 days in 110th Australian Base Hospital, and this led to him being transferred on 13 Jul 1944 to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF to prepare for his discharge which took place on 14 Jul 1944 as "Medically unfit for further service".
