War Service
Charles was mobilised on 7 Mar 1941 and posted to the 5th Fortress Company AAMC (later redesignated as 60th Australian Camp Hospital) following a period of training at Melville Camp. On 23 Dec 1941 he was called up for full time duty, Trade Grouped as an Orderly. On 6 Nov 1943 he was transferred to the 75th Australian Camp Hospital, and was detached for a few weeks at a time to units such as 451 Heavy Anti Aircraft Battery (8 - 15 Nov 1943), 19th Garrison Battalion (17 Jul - 2 Nov 1944) and 37th Australian Camp Hospital (5 - 20 Nov 1944). The next day he was transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for re-assignment.
With the reduced risk of invasion, troop numbers fell in Western Australia and Charles was sent to the New South Wales based 1st Australian Base Depot - Personnel, arriving there on 6 Jan 1945. On 10 Mar 1945 Charles boarded HMT Katoomba in Townsville for Jacquinot Bay on New Britain, disembarking on 17 Mar 1945 and joining the 6th Australian Field Ambulance. On 28 May 1945 he boarded the SS Van Outhoorn in Jacquinot Bay for Cairns, disembarking on 1 Jun 1945. With his unit being disbanded Charles was transferred back to Western Australia on 3 Oct 1945. The next day he was with the 75th Australian Camp Hospital until 23 Nov 1945 when he was transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for discharge on 29 Nov 1945, noted as an occupational release.
