Mervyn enlisted in the part time CMF at Armadale on 21 Oct 1941 and was called up for full time service on 5 Jan 1942. His inital unit was the 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment ww2 at Bunbury, later moving to Wanneroo. On 30 Jan 1942, with his unit known as 10th Australian Reconnaissance Battalion, he was charged with being AWOL from 1:00am 25 Jan 1942 to 12:45am 26 Jan 1942. He was awarded two days Confined to Barracks and the forfeiture of a day's pay. Mervyn was allocated to A Company of the reconnaissance unit. On 10 Aug 1942 Mervyn enlists in the 2nd AIF with a new regimental number of WX27250.
On 9 Jul 1942 Mervyn was transferred to the 109th Reserve Motor Transport Company, but on 3 Aug 1942 he transfers to 137th Australian General Transport Company. He then was transferred to 139th Australian General Transport Company on 4 Sep 1942, He was graded as a Trade Group III Storeman on 18 Dec 1942 for pay purposes. On 12 May 1943 Mervyn was admitted to the 5th Australian Light Field Ambulance until 5 Jun 1943 when he was released to 3rd Advanced Reinforcement Depot with him then returning to his unit on 10 Jun 1943. In September he was granted 5 days leave.
On 2 Feb 1945 Mervyn left Western Australia for the Australian Reinforcement Training Battalion (Jungle Warfare) at Cunungra in Queensland, arriving there on 6 Feb 1945. Training completed he was held by the 5th Australian Advanced Reinforcement Depot from 3 April until 17 May 1945 when he was posted to Z Special Unit. His records show that he was moved to Morotai and served with his Special Force unit outside Australian teritory from 2 Jun 1945 until 8 Oct 1945. On his return, 4 Nov 1945, he was posted to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for reallocation. On 8 Nov 1945 he was transferred to the 124th Australian General Transport Company, but with reducing need, he was transferred back to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot's Discharge Section on 14 Dec 1945 and they discharged Mervyn on 17 Dec 1945.
