Brief History

In early 1941 8th Military District Training Depot was established in Brisbane to train, hold and despatch reinforcements to both the Thursday Island region and to Port Moresby. The unit moved to Toowoomba in late 1941 and then to Selheim (Charters Towers) in April 1942 where the unit was renamed NG Line of Communication Area Training Depot. In July it was renamed again to NG Force Advanced Reinforcement Depot. They continued to supply reinforcements to New Guinea and the Torres Strait, and in June 1943 became the 5th Australian Advanced Reinforcement Depot

In September 1943 1st Advanced Reinforcement Depot moved to Port Moresby and undertook the supply of reinforcements to some specific units, so in December the 5th Australian Advanced Reinforcement Depot expanded to eight companies by absorbing both the 3rd and 4th Advanced Reinforcement Depots, holding and dispatching reinforcements from all Australian units. In December 1944 they moved to occupy a former US base at Wacol in Brisbane from where they continued their role until the end of the war.
