Pre War
During 1931 Roy married Elsie Agnes Hellen Caple. Elsie died on 22 Apr 1951, aged 42 in Bellevue.

War Service
Roy was Mobilised on 16 Aug 1940 at Midland Junction, and posted to a Australian Army Ordnance Corp unit. On 27 Sep 1940 he was deemed qualified as a Trade Group III Equipment Repairer. On 4 Apr 1941 he was promoted Corporal and on 7 Apr 1941 he was posted to Karrakatta as an Ordnance Bootmaker before being discharged from the CMF on 5 May 1941 in order to enlist as a Private in the 2nd AIF the following day. On 9 May 1941 he was taken on strength by the AASC Training Depot at Claremont.
On 20 Jun 1941 Roy was appointed an acting Lance Corporal before being transferred on 19 Aug 1941 to the 2/10th Australian Armoured Regiment at Northam. On 15 Nov 1941 Roy embarked on HMT Katoomba in Fremantle for Sydney, disembarking on 24 Nov and then entraining for Puckapunyal in Victoria where the Armoured Regiment was assembling. The period 1 Dec 41 to 31 May 42 is not included in his records but we might assume he remained with the unit until 1 Jun 1942 when he was transferred to the Armoured Corp Workshops, but then detached back to the 2/10th Australian Armoured Regiment which relocated to New South Wales on 14 Jul 1942. Roy had been promoted to Acting Corporal on 15 Jun 1942.
On 5 Sep 1942 Roy was admitted to the 2/14th Australian Light Field Ambulance with Curti or Cervical Adonitis, rejoining his unit on 10 Sep 1942. The unit was relocated to Western Australia with the regiment to be based at Claremont on 6 Dec 1942, and Roy enjoyed some leave until 1 Jan 1943. On 22 Mar 1943 Roy was seen by the 2/14th Australian Light Field Ambulance before being admitted to the 103rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station with Conjunctivitis. On 29 Mar 1943 he was transferred to the 2/1st Australian General Hospital at Guildford. They treated him until 16 Apr 1943, and Roy rejoined his unit on 22 Apr 1943. On 28 Dec 1943 his rank of Corporal was confirmed.
On 2 Mar 1944 Roy was admitted to the 2/14th Australian Light Field Ambulance with Dermatitis on his face, and the following day he was transferred to the 118th Australian General Hospital where on 24 Mar 1944 he was seen by a Medical Board who changed his medical classification to 'B'. On 27 Mar 1944 he was transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot to prepare for his discharge which took place on 17 Apr 1944.
