Had 5 years previous service with the Royal Irish Rifles in France (WWI)

War Service

Enlisted at the Subiaco Drill Hall. His initial posting from 24 Nov 1939 was to the 10th Garrison Battalion, before being posted to No 1 Training Battalion at Northam on 1 Jun 1940. On 24 Aug 1940 he was charged with: 1) Using insubordinate language to a Superior Officer on 24 Aug 1940; and 2)Disobeying a lawful command given to him by a Superior Officer. He was admonished and fined Ten shillings ($1).

Two days later he was transferred to the No 2 Depot or Training Battalion. Granted leave from 14 - 1 Oct 1940, and another period from 23 Dec 1940 until 3 Jan 1941. John was promoted Corporal on 10 Feb 1941 and posted to 'A' Company as an Instructor. He then enjoyed another period of leave from 26 May to 2 Jun 1941 and again from 10 - 16 Jun 1941. On 17 Jun 1941 he was detached to the Camp Training School until 11 Jul 1941.

On 14 Oct 1941 John was transferred to the 1st Training Battalion and on 29 Oct 1941 left them to take a discharge at his own request. He was discharged on 5 Nov 1941.
