World War 1

Roy had enlisted as an 18 year old on 22 Jul 1915, and trained with the 9th Reinforcements for the 16th Battalion. Roy joined the 16th Battalion on 8 Jan 1916 at Ishmalia in Egypt, but from 14 Jan until 5 Mar 1916 he required treatment in hospital for mumps. He travelled with them to France, leaving Alexandria on 1 Jun 1916, and arriving in Marseilles and disembarking on the 9th. Roy was wounded in action (shell shock) on 12 Aug 1916 at Mouquet Farm. The damage must have been slight, as he rejoined his unit three days later on 15 Aug 1916.

On 3 Nov 1916 he was transferred to the 2nd Division's Ammunition Column, remustered as a Driver, and following another brief spell receiving medical attention for Trench Feet he was posted to the 6th Australian Field Artillery Brigade's Ammunition Column. Other than one more short period receiving medical attention in 1917 for Diarrhea, he served until he boarded the SS Kaiser-i-hind on 6 May 1919, for Australia, reached on 9 Jun 1919, and his discharge which took place on 1 Aug 1919.

Pre WW 2

During 1924 Roy married Maud (Christine) Palmer (1896 - 1975). Christine died 26 Mar 1975 in Margaret River.
