Pre War

Student at Perth Boy's School until mid way through Year 9. Then served 4 years 2 months of a 5 year apprenticeship as a tailor's cutter. On 27 Sep 1941 Maxwell married Joyce Margery Hookway (1917 - 1973) in St Mary's Church, Colin street, West Perth. A son Ian Maxwell Ottaway was born 10 Apr 1943Margery died on 20 Sep 1973 in Bayswater aged 56.

War Service

On 28 Aug 1940 Max joined the RAAF, mustered as a Tailor. His initial posting was to No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF where he began by undertaking a Recruit Drill Course from 28 Aug - 2 Oct 1940. On 11 Oct 1940 he was transferred to Station HQ Pearce and on 1 Mar 1941 he was appointed as a Leading Aircraftman. On 7 Nov 1941 he was transferred to No. 5 Embarkation Depot RAAF in Perth.


On 18 Aug 1942 he was transferred to the No. 5 School of Technical Training RAAF, and after almost 3 years there, on 30 Jul 1945 he was transferred to No. 4 Aircraft Depot RAAF at Boulder. While with the School of Technical training he had been promoted temporary Corporal on 1 Oct 1942, a rank he was to retain.


On 28 Nov 1945 Max's time in the RAAF was coming to an end with his transfer to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF in Perth to prepare for his discharge on 24 Dec 1945.
