War Service

Signed enlistment papers in Katanning. On arrival in camp, Ron was allotted to the 10th Light Horse Regiment's 5th reinforcement draft, and he travelled with them to Egypt in April 1915.

Arrived at Gallipoli from Alexandria on 1 Jul 1915 and was taken on strength of "B" Squadron of the 10th Light Horse Regiment on 13 Jul 1915 before being evacuated ill to Heliopolis with influenza on 16 Aug 1915 aboard HMT Scotian. Admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital on 21 Aug 1915 before being transferred to the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital on 25 Aug 1915. Admitted to the 3rd Convalescent Camp on 11 Sep 1915 at Helouan before being discharged to duty on 29 Sep 1915.

Returned to Gallipoli on 13 Nov 1915, in time for the evacuation and return to Egypt. The majority of the Regiment, along with Ron, were evacuated late in the evening of 14 Dec 1915 by a lighter to the steamer Abbassia for Mudros where they arrived before day break on 15 Dec 1915. Following several days on the island, they departed for Egypt aboard the HMAT A10 Karoo at 4:30pm on 16 Dec 1915, disembarking in Alexandria on 20 Dec 1915.

In Egypt Ron had a mild attack of the mumps in Feb 1916 and then a cold in Mar 1916 which saw him admitted to the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital from 28 Mar - 6 Apr 1916. During this period in hospital he had been transferred to the newly formed 4th Division Artillery on 1 Apr 1916, initially allocated to the 3rd Section of the 4th Division Ammunition Column as a Driver. His unit sailed from Alexandria on the 6th June 1916 for Marseilles on the SS Oriana, disembarking on 13 Jun 1916.

On 12 Oct 1917 Ron was transferred to the 11th Field Artillery Brigade's 42nd Battery and on 24 Nov 1917 Ronald was re-allocated to the 10th Field Artillery Brigade's 38th Battery. On 11 Aug 1918 Ron was one of 9 men in his unit wounded, with he and one other requiring a visit to the Field Ambulance. He rejoined the 10th Field Artillery Brigade in France on 28 Sep 1918, before proceeding to the UK on furlough, being absent from 12 - 31 Oct 1918. He rejoined the unit in France briefly before returning to England on 16 Jan 1919 for repatriation to Australia. On his return, he was landed at Albany on 7 Apr 1919 and later discharged by 5th Military District on 10 Jun 1919.

In the 429th Casualty List, Ron is shown as Wounded (Tingerup). His arrival home on the Anchises is announced in the Daily News on Thu 27 Mar 1919.

Post War

In 1927 he married Thomasina Henrietta King in Perth. Thomasina died on 26 Jul 1947 aged 52 at Mt Helena.

Electoral Roll entries include: 1931 a labourer in Waroona; 1936 a labourer at 18 Hubert street, Guildford with wife Thomasina; 1943 a teamster in Johnson rd, Mt Helena; 1949 - 1958 he was at 30 Spring Park road, Midland Junction. His sister was Ada Marsh (Mrs GF Marsh)
