Ernie's original enlistment was in the CMF on Sep 1941, as a Sapper with the Fortress Engineers, Fremantle Fixed Defences. On 18 Oct 1941 Ernie was charged with "Neglecting to obey Camp Standing Orders" for which he was awarded 3 day's Confined to Baracks. On 2 Nov 1941 he was charged with "Asleep while on Picquet Duty at No. 3 Engine Room". This time he was awarded 7 day's Confined to Barracks, and on 24 Nov 1941 he was detached to the Roayal Australian Artillery Barracks. On 11 Dec 1941 Ernie was charged with being "AWOL from 8:00am 8 Dec 1941 until 12 Noon 10 Dec 1941. Fined 40/- ($4.00), forfeit of 3 day's pay (18/-). He then rejoined his normal unit. From 2 - 8 Jun 1942 he was a patient of the 39th Australian Camp Hospital on Rottnest. On 29 Jun 1942 he was again in trouble, charged with being "AWOL from 10:00am 22 Jun 1942 until 10:00am 23 Jun 1942. Fined 20/- ($2) and forfeited a day's pay.
