War Service
Original enlistment was in the CMF on 5 Sep 1940 as W7067, a Private in the 11th Australian Infantry Battalion (City of Perth Regiment) based at the Melville camp. He had had a period of part time service followed his call up on full time duty on 17 Dec 1941. He was granted leave without pay until 23 Feb 1942. Francis enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 25 Jun 1942, and on 27 Aug 1942 he was reclassified as a Trade Group II Cook. Between 11 Oct 1942 and 4 Dec 1942 Francis attended a Cooking Course and when he rejoined the battalion on 20 Dec 1942 he was promoted to Corporal.
From 21 Jan 1943 until 3 Mar 1943 Francis attended a Cooking Course in Geelong, graduating as a Class I Cook returning in time to be sent (after some leave) on 3 Apr 1943 to Wayville in South Australia before en-training again on 8 Apr 1943 for the Northern Territory where he rejoined his battalion on 17 Apr 1943. A year later, on 15 May 1944 Francis was promoted to Acting Sergeant, and the next day, on 16 May 1944 he was evacuated to the 107th Australian General Hospital with pleurisy, rejoining the battalion on 26 May 1944. His rank of Sergeant was confirmed on 16 Aug 1944.
ON 25 Nov 1944 he embarked with the unit in Darwin aboard USAT Jane Addams for Jacquinot Bay on the south coast of New Britain, disembarking there on 3 Dec 1944. On 7 Jan 1945 Francis was transferred on paper to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot. He embarked on HMT Duntroon in Jacquinot Bay on 12 Jan 1945, disembarking in Brisbane on 17 Jan 1945, and was discharged on 5 Feb 1945.
