Enlisted at the Subiaco Drill Hall. His initial posting from 24 Nov 1939 was to the 10th Australian Garrison Battalion, before being posted to No. 1 Training Depot at Northam on 1 Jun 1940. On 24 Aug 1940 he was charged with: 1) Using insubordinate language to a Superior Officer on 24 Aug 1940; and 2)Disobeying a lawful command given to him by a Superior Officer. He was admonished and fined ten shillings ($1).

On 14 Oct 1941 John was transferred to the 1st Training Battalion and on 29 Oct 1941 he left them to take a discharge at his own request, effective 5 Nov 1941.
