David enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 13 Dec 1940 and was with the No3. Depot Battalion until 14 Jan 1941 when he was transferred to the 13th Australian Infantry Training Battalion at Northam, earmarked as a reinforcement for the 2/4th Australian Machine Gun Battalion.
