Pre War

Tom had previously served for 3 years with the 18th Light Horse Regiment, which was to be redesignated the 25th Light Horse Regiment and then in October 1914, the 10th Light Horse Regiment.

Thomas married Olive G Skewes in Claremont in 1914. Olive lived in Armadale prior to their marriage and appears to have remained there until 1925 or later.

War Service

Tom joined in Guildford the day after the 10th Light Horse Regiment was created, and was allocated to 'A' Squadron and travelled with them to Egypt.

On 30 Jan 1915 he was transferred to the Regiment's Head Quarters as a Batman. He served at Gallipoli from 16 May to 3 Jun 1915 with their 'B' Squadron. On 4 Jun 1915 he joined the Machine Gun Section before becoming ill. Tom was embarked on HMT Ascania with diarrhoea and sent to Egypt where he entered the 1st Australian General Hospital in Heliopolis on 11 Aug 1915 before being sent to the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital the same day.

At that time he was found to have a minor heart complaint and was released on 24 Aug 1915 to the convalescent hospital where he remained until he was fit again on 15 Nov 1915. On 29 Nov 1915 Tom was transferred to AIF Infantry Headquarters where on 1 Dec 1915 he was promoted to Sergeant.

Tom was next transferred to Australian Records Section Alexandria on 25 May 1916, and on 1 Jun 1916 he boarded HMT Transylvania for the UK where he entered the Australian Records Section on 10 Jun 1916. On 12 Aug 1916 he was sent to Rouen in France to join the 3rd Echelon GHQ. He remained with them until 1 Sep 1917 when he was detached to the Australian Infantry Base Depot in Le Havre. Three weeks later he proceeded to England to join No. 4 Command Depot in Codford. In early Dec 1917 he returned to Rouen in France and rejoined the Australian Section of the 3rd Anzac Echelon.

In Apr 1918 he proceeded to England, classified as Permanently Unfit and spent the next 2 months in No. 2 Command Depot before entering the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital at Harefield on 24 Jun 1918 with Tubercle of the Lung. Sent back to Australia on medical grounds, he entered the 8th Australian General Hospital in Fremantle on 11 Sep 1918 and was transferred to the 22nd Australian Auxiliary Hospital at Wooroloo on 24 Feb 1919. Thomas was discharged as unfit (Phthisis) on 17 Apr 1919 by the 5th Military District.

Post War

Electoral Roll entries - 1925 Carradine road Armadale, orchardist. His death in 1927 occurred in the South Australian Repatriation Hospital at Myrtle Bank, Adelaide.

In 1931 Olive has returned to WA and was c/- Mr Groves, Pantapin, home duties. No other entries
