On 4 Apr 1941 he was promoted Corporal and on 7 Apr 1941 he was posted to Karrakatta as an Ordnance Bootmaker before being discharged from the CMF on 5 May 1941 in order to enlist as a Private in the 2nd AIF the following day. On 9 May 1941 he was taken on strength by the AASC Training Depot at Claremont.

Roy was Mobilised on 16 Aug 1940 at Midland Junction, and posted to a Australian Army Ordnance Corp unit. On 27 Sep 1940 he was deemed qualified as a Trade Group III Equipment Repairer.
