Joseph's initial enlistment was 23 Jan 1941 in the militia with the 7th Heavy Brigade RAA. He was posted to the Swanbourne Gun Site. On 10 Mar 1941 he was transferred to the sub unit on Rottnest, and in October was granted 12 days leave. On 12 Nov 1941 Joseph was admitted to the Rottnest Camp Hospital before being released to his unit on 14 Nov 1941. He was trade classified as a Cook level 2. In January 1942 he enjoyed another short period of leave, and one more in March/April. He was sent to a Cooking and Catering Course in June/July before he decided to enlist in the 2nd AIF on 27 Jul 1942 while based on Rottnest Island. On 8 Sep 1942 Joseph was promoted as a Bombardier., and on 13 Nov 1942 he volunteered to serve overseas. On 20 Nov 1942 he was transferred to the Peron Battery.
