War Service
Fred entered Blackboy Hill camp on 4 May 1915 and was allocated initially to the 1st reinforcement draft for the 28th Battalion. At some point he was transferred to the 8th reinforcement draft for the 11th Battalion, and he travelled with them to Egypt aboard HMAT A68 Anchises. On arrival in Egypt Fred was sent to the 1st Training Battalion at Zeitoun, and from there on 21 Oct 1915 to Anzac Cove. On arrival they were kept separate from the 11th Battalion which left for Mudros on 17 Nov 1915, while the reinforcements remained behind in the reinforcement camp carrying out heavy work as they were fresh and unwearied compared to those that had been there for longer. The 8th reinforcement draft, including Fred joined the 11th Battalion at Sarpi on Lemnos Island on 12 Dec 1915.
On 20 Dec 1915 on Lemnos Island Fred was admitted to the 3rd Field Ambulance with mumps, and they in turn transferred him to the 3rd Australian General Hospital's isolation ward on the island. On 9 Jan 1916 he was evacuated to Egypt aboard HMHS Carisbrook Castle, arriving in Alexandria on 11 Jan 1916. Admitted to the 19th General Hospital with Paratyphoid on 12 Jan 1916, a week later on 20 January he was transferred to the 2nd Australian Auxiliary Hospital in Ghezireh until he was released to duty on 3 Mar 1916, rejoining the battalion in Serapeum on 10 Mar 1916. On 29 Mar 1916 he boarded the HMT Corsican in Alexandria harbour for Marseilles, disembarking there on 5 Apr 1916.
Fred was Killed in Action during a German raid on the Australian front lines in the evening of 30 May 1916 near Cordonerrie Farm, Fromelles. Heavy artillery and machine gun fire for more than an hour left the trenches badly battered and casualties totaling 36 killed, 61 wounded and 6 missing, believed to have been buried or blown to pieces by the artillery.
Notes
