Arthur enlisted in the RAAF on 10 Dec 1941 at the [[No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre]] in Perth, accepted as a Trainee Group V. On 12 Jan 1942 Arthur was transferred to the [[No. 5 School of Technical Training RAAF‎]] at Pearce airbase. Following successful completion of a preliminary skills course he was on 10 Mar 1942 transferred to the [[No. 1 School of Technical Training RAAF]]‎, located in the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne to undertake further training. Course completed, Arthur was next sent, on 21 May 1942, to [[No. 1 Engineering School RAAF]] at Ascot Vale.

During 1946 Arthur married Ida Averil Harley in Perth. Ida died on 11 Oct 1999, aged 77.
