Enlisted in the CMF on a part time basis on 5 Feb 1942, on 25 May 1942 Alf was mobilised (taken on full time strength) at Claremont. Five days later he was transferred to the 13th Australian Infantry Training Battalion at Northam camp. Following some basic training he was transferred to the Western Australia Line of Communication Area Training Depot AAMC at Northam. From 31 Aug 1942 until 25 Feb 1943 he was detached to 4 R A R. On 25 Feb 1943 he was transferred to the 118th Australian General Hospital at Northam where on 1 Jul 1943 he was granted Proficiency Pay.
Just over a year later, on 11 Apr 1944 he was transferred to Claremont General Details Depot before entraining for Victoria on 16 Apr 1944. In Victoria on 8 Jul 1944 he was reallocated to the 5th Australian Advanced Reinforcement Depot, and on 8 Aug 1944 he was transferred to the Northern Territory Force Reception Camp. On 23 Aug 1944 he was transferred to the 22nd Australian Mechanical Equipment Park Company, attached to the AAMC. Alf transferred to the 2nd AIF on 28 Oct 1944 and was reallocated the number WX41978. The next day he was transferred to New South Wales Command before being sent back to WA. Alfred was granted leave without pay from 9 - 23 Jun 1945, later extended to 1 Aug 1945. On his return to duty he was earmarked for discharge (Essential Services), which occurred on 2 Aug 1945.
