War Service

Leslie was mobilised into the CMF on 22 Apr 1942 and he transferred to the 2nd AIF on 22 Dec 1942 at Claremont. He was transferred to the 419th HAA Gun Station of the 5th Australian Anti Aircraft Battery on 2 Jan 1943 at Buckland Hill. On 10 Mar 1943 Les was charged with 'Without orders from his Superior officer, leaves his post 8:30am 10 Mar 1943.' He was fined 20/- or 4 days pay equivalent. On 6 May 1943 he was charged with 'Sleeping at his Post'. Fined 80/- (16 days pay). On 11 Jun 1943 Les was charged with 'Leaving his post before being regularly relieved on 9 Jun 1943'. Fined 100/- (20 days pay) and awarded 7 days detention. However, on 16 Jun 1943 this entry in his B103 is cancelled and replaced with a similar fine, but only 7 days detention. Then on 28 Jun 1943 he was charged with being AWOL from 8:30am until 10:00pm on 28 Jun 1943 for which he was fined £5, forfeited a days pay and was sentenced to 28 days in Detention (total loss of wages is equivalent to 49 days pay). 1/6th of his detention was remitted, and thus he was in custody from 1 - 24 Jul 1943, before rejoining his unit on the 25th.

On 27 Oct 1943 Les was charged with being AWOL from 11:00am until 5:00pm on 11 Oct 1943. Again he was fined £5 and awarded 28 days in Detention. On 19 Nov 1943 he had 1/6 of his sentence remitted and was able to rejoin his unit on 21 Nov 1943. On 26 Nov 1943 Les was transferred to the 102nd Australian Anti Aircraft Regiment and on 3 Dec 1943 he embarked for Port Hedland on a State Ship. Les was granted Proficiency Pay on 21 May 1944, and on 9 Dec 1944 he was back in Perth to entrain for New South Wales.

On 2 Mar 1945 Les was transferred to 1st Australian Base Depot Personnel as a General Reinforcement, and on 10 Mar 1945 he was posted to the 21st Australian Infantry Training Battalion which then passed him to the 28th Australian Infantry Training Battalion on 24 Apr 1945. On 2 Jul 1945 Les was charged with 'Conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline on 27 Jun 1945'. Found guilty he was fined £1 and awarded 7 days Confined to Barracks. He also forfeited his proficiency pay. On 21 Jul 1945 he was transferred to Australian Reinforcement Training Battalion (Jungle Warfare) at Canungra. However, with the war over, he was sent back to Western Australia in late August.

On 13 Sep 1945 Les was charged with having been AWOL from 8:15am on 12 Sep 1945 until 6:10am on 13 Sep 1945. He was fined £1 and he forfeied a days pay. On 29 Sep 1945 he joined the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for reassingment. Les was transferred to the 26th Australian Works Company in November before breaking the large toe on his left foot on 18 Dec 1945. He was admitted to the 110th Australian Base Hospital where on 3 Jan 1946 he was charged with having been AWOL from 2:00pm on 31 Dec 1945 until 12:30 pm on 2 Jan 1946 for which he was fined £3 and he forfeited 2 days pay. He was transferred on 5 Jan 1946 to the 71st Australian Camp Hospital who treated him until he was released back to the Works Company on 17 Jan 1946. On 23 Jan 1946 Les was detached to the 7th Returned Stores Depot, returning to the works company on 6 Feb 1946. The following day he was detached to the 7th Australian Advanced Ordnance Depot at Nungarin, returning to the Works Company on 16 May 1946. Les was detached again to the 7th Returned Stores Depot on 29 May 1946 until 18 Jun 1946 when he was transferred to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for discharge proceedings. This occurred on 5 Jul 1946.
