War Service
On 26 Jan 1939 John enlisted with the 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment ww2 part time, having previously served with them as a Trooper between 1937 and 1938, but had resigned when he left the district. On 29 Mar 1941 he was discharged - Reserved Occupation. He enlisted again in the CMF on 26 Mar 1942 with Army Number W468. John was posted to the 22nd Army Field Company, and on 9 Apr 1942 he was called up for full time duty.
On 8 Aug 1942 John was found guilty of being AWOL from midnight 6 Aug 1942 until 6:00pm on 7 Aug 1942. Fined 10/- (2 days pay) and the automatic forfeiture of a days pay. On 9 Oct 1942 John was admitted to the Northam Camp Hospital, rejoining his unit 10 days later on 19 Oct 1942 and proceeded on a short period of LWOP. On 18 Aug 1943 John was admitted to the 75th Australian Camp Hospital in Claremont, and was released on 21 Aug 1943. Soon after he was granted a 3 week period of LWOP to assist on the farm, and again 4 weeks LWOP from 1 Jan 1944. On 31 Jan 1944 John was admitted to the 122nd Australian Special Hospital in Melville, returning to his unit on 18 Feb 1944. On that day John enlisted in the 2nd AIF.
John was medically re-evaluated on 12 Jun 1944 and downgraded to B2 - Feet. On 3 Jul 1944 he was transferred to the 2nd Australian Port Construction Company. However, on 26 Jul 1944 he was transferred to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot to be reviewed by another Medical Board. Again found B2- Feet, John was discharged on 10 Aug 1944 for Essential Services - Food Production (eggs).
