Pre Army service Gwen had a member of the civilian VADs at Claremont
War Service
Gwen had been mobilised on 6 Mar 1943 and called up for full time service on 18 Mar 1943. On 21 Mar 1943 she was detached to the 6th AWS Training Company to undertake basic training. On 12 Apr 1943 she was posted to 38th Australian Camp Hospital at Northam, where on 3 Aug 1943 Gwen was enlisted in the 2nd AIF, with a new number (WFX40292).
On 21 Jan 1944 Gwen was transferred to 6th AWS Training Company at Guidford, and on 10 Feb 1944 she was detached to 75th Australian Camp Hospital, and on 6 Apr 1944 transferred to 118th Australian General Hospital at Northam. On 17 Jun 1944 Gwen married John Patrick Whitaker and was granted 7 days leave without pay from 19 - 26 Jun 1944. While she then returned to her unit, on 7 Aug 1944 she was transferred to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot to prepare for discharge. Gwen was discharged on 9 Aug 1944 at her own request.
Post War
John and Gwen had two daughters, one being Lorraine Margaret (1949-2015)
Electoral Roll entries: 1949 - 1980 at 17 Boreham street, Cottesloe, (John a carpenter). John died on 15 Aug 2007 in Mosman Park.
