War Service
On mobilisation to the CMF on 8 Aug 1941, Arnold advised that he was a conscientious objector to combative service, but would serve in the AAMC. Arnold spent his part time service with the 8th Australian Casualty Clearing Station until 5 Mar 1942 when he was transferred to the 10th Ambulance Train. On 11 Apr 1942 at Helena Vale, Arnold was charged with Disobeying in such a manner as to show willful defiance of authority, a lawful command given by his superior officer. He was awarded 14 days detention, forfeiting £4/4/- ($8.40). Arnold spent from 7 - 21 Apr 1942 in the Western Command Detention Barracks. On his release he was sent to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for reassignment, and on 22 Jun 1942 he was called up for full time duty with the 5th Australian Employment Company
On 8 Jul 1942 he faced a District Court Martial, charged with Disobeying in such a manner as to show willful defiance of authority. Found Guilty he was sentenced to six months detention and forfeiture of 1,194/- or £59/14/- ($119.40). On 4 Dec 1942 Arnold had one sixth of his sentence remitted. However his behaviour seems not to have been changed by his incarceration as on 8 Dec 1942 He again faced a District Court Martial, charged with Disobeying in such a manner as to show willful defiance of authority. Again found guilty, this time he was sentenced to two years detention. On 23 Dec 1943 he had the remaining 360 days of his sentence remitted, having served 378 days and lost wages for that period. Held by the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot while issues surrounding his further employment were decided, on 26 Jan 1944 he was discharged
