War Service

In Egypt on 3 Jan 1916 Walter was taken on strength by the 11th Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir, but on 29 Feb 1916 he was one of the first men to transfer to the 51st Battalion. Following some bedding down training the 51st Battalion sailed form Alexandria on 5 Jun 916 aboard the HMT Ivernia, arriving in Marseilles and disembarking on 12 Jun 1916.

The battalion was transported north to the Western front in rail carriages designed to carry cattle and horses - 8 horses to a carriage or 40 men. This journey took several days and on arrival the battalion was given only a short time in the front lines learning the ropes I late June and early July before it was used as an attacking force during the Somme Offensive.
